Not too far into the 20th century, small town Armenian apothecary Mikael uses the dowry to go to Constantinople to study medicine and consents to wed an attractive local woman. Once there, he befriends Emre, the son of a high ranking Turkish official, and Ana, an Armenian ballerina raised in Paris. Ana is involved with Chris Myers, a fiercely determined American reporter for the Associated Press, a detail that does not prevent Mikael from falling head over heels for her. These cozy complications are brutally disturbed by the outbreak of the first World War. Mikael averts conscription into the Ottoman military but, when he tries to defend his uncle during the round-ups of April 24th from imprisonment, 1915, he's detained and sent into a labour camp himself. The life there is merciless but there are worse things happening to the Armenians elsewhere.

Terry George is accustomed to shining a light on blackest history. The Oscar-winning writer-director has previously tackled film issues that were unlikely that were such as the 1994 Rwandan genocide as well as the 1981 IRA hunger strikes. Here the Irish filmmaker takes on the Armenian genocide that began in 1915 and finished after the Ottoman government’s systematic extermination of 1.5 million Armenians.
